x-Music Lab performance

What is music? What kinds of sound should SFC create for the world, and what should it express?

At x-Music Lab, we explore music's value and possibilities and create x-Music: the next, as-yet-unnamed form of music.

Since its founding in 1990, SFC has contributed to musical, artistic, and cultural development through projects including internet-based live concert broadcasts, computer music, and media art. x-Music Lab carries this spirit forward by envisioning and practicing new forms of music across technology, art, science, and society.

Our research and creative practice are guided by five aims:

  1. To create the next, as-yet-unnamed form of music: x-Music
  2. To explore ways of making music under eXtreme conditions
  3. To continually create eXperimental musical prototypes
  4. To cross disciplinary boundaries and generate multiplication (X): synergies of values and ideas
  5. To pursue self-realization and self-eXpression through music

Our research and creative practice investigate relationships between music and diverse phenomena, including music generation based on brain activity and bodily movement, and music generated from biological and life-process data.

Members with expertise in music production, sound art, media art, computer music, electronics, programming, and music science collaborate to present prototypes of unknown music to society.
